On Friday, November 4, 2011, the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) draws one step closer to shutting down GPO Access. Once the Friday editions of daily updated content (e.g., Federal Register, Congressional Record) have been uploaded, GPO will cease updating GPO Access in terms of both database content and HTML pages. This will mark the start of the archive only phase of GPO Access and new content will only be loaded to FDsys. During this phase, GPO Access will remain publicly accessible as a reference archive.

Bloomberg Buys BNA
From beSpacific:
via Bloomberg: “Bloomberg LP, the closely held news and financial information provider, agreed to buy The Bureau of National Affairs Inc. for about $990 million to add legal, tax and regulatory research and analysis. BNA shareholders, who are current and former employees, will get $39.50 a share in cash in a transaction that is projected to be completed this year, New York-based Bloomberg said in a statement. The deal is part of Bloomberg’s expansion into new businesses to add products to the company’s terminal, a data hub used by traders and executives, and add to new titles for its news group. In 2009, Bloomberg acquired Businessweek magazine and New Energy Finance, which provides analysis on clean energy sources. BNA, which publishes the Daily Labor Report and U.S. Law Week, will “significantly grow Bloomberg’s presence in Washington” and its research will contribute to coverage and analysis of employment, health care, labor, accounting, intellectual property and telecommunications, Bloomberg said.”
via BNA: Bloomberg Enters Agreement to Acquire BNA – “The acquisition would significantly grow Bloomberg’s presence in the Washington, DC area through its multiple operating units, Bloomberg News, Bloomberg Government, Bloomberg Law and BNA — which would work together to provide unparalleled coverage and analysis of U.S. policy and regulatory issues for customers.”

Academic Use of Copyrighted Works and Fair Use
Will there be new standards set for fair use in academic settings? How much of a work can be copied before you need to ask for permission from the copyright holder? Educators and academic librarian eagerly await the answers to these questions when the federal judge issues his ruling in Cambridge University Press v. Becker, No. 1:08-cv-1425 (N.D. Ga.) In 2008, three publishers sued Georgia State University, claiming that “GSU professors routinely infringed copyrights of thousands of works assigned in courses by posting excerpts of those works on electronic reserve in the university library’s online reading room for use by their students”. Company’s Email Policies Scrutinized in NJ Opinion
A New Jersey employee who sent messages to her attorney from her personal, password-protected Yahoo! e-mail account using a company-issued laptop had a reasonable expectation of privacy in those e-mails, a unanimous New Jersey Supreme Court ruled March 30. (Stengart v. Loving Care Agency Inc. N.J., No. A-16-09, 3/30/10).
Stengart was executive director of nursing for Loving Care, a home health care provider, until she resigned in January 2008. Shortly after her resignation, she filed a state court lawsuit alleging violations of the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination. Stengart never saved any Yahoo identification or password on the Loving Care computer, but internet browser software automatically retained temporary internet files showing the contents of seven or eight messages she had exchanged with her lawyer.
